The same summit and the same mountain transport as the Golden loop, but a 20-minute train to Alpnachstad instead of the lake cruise. Faster and cheaper; the right pick if you are short on time or have already done the boat.
Board at the quays by the station. The boat threads the lake’s fjord arms to Alpnachstad; sit on deck, the mountain grows the whole way.

Season, access, passes and what to bring - the practical details, one tab each.
Kriens side (gondola): bus 1 from Lucerne station to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus, about 15 minutes, then a short signed walk to the gondola.
Alpnachstad side (cogwheel): S-Bahn train from Lucerne in about 20 minutes, or the lake boat in 70 to 90 minutes.
From Zurich: 50 minutes by train to Lucerne, or the guided day trip with coach pickup.
By car: paid parking at both Alpnachstad and Kriens; the loop works better by public transport.
Cogwheel railway: 11 May to 29 November 2026, every 35 minutes.
Kriens cableways run year-round except maintenance 30 to 31 March and 19 October to 27 November 2026.
The boat leg (and so the full Golden Round Trip) runs May to mid-October.
Allow 4 to 6 hours for the loop with about 2 hours on top; start by 10 AM in summer to beat the queues.
Official fares: CHF 84 return (Kriens or Alpnachstad), CHF 119.80 Golden Round Trip, CHF 94.20 Silver, from Lucerne, 2nd class.
Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card, GA, Eurail and Interrail: 50% off the official fare - not free. Lucerne Travel Pass rides free. Children 6 to 15.99 pay half; free with the SBB Junior Travelcard.
Reserve a cogwheel seat separately once you hold any ticket: changeable to 30 minutes before departure, not refundable.
The Viator packages bundle every leg into one mobile ticket with USD checkout and free cancellation to 24 hours.
Layers: the summit runs about 10°C colder than Lucerne, with wind on the terraces.
Real shoes - the Dragon Path galleries and Tomlishorn trail are rocky.
Sunscreen and sunglasses; the light at 2,000 m is fierce.
Check the Pilatus webcam in the morning: clouds on the summit mean no view, and the mountain makes its own weather.

Definitely one of the highlights of our Europe trip. It was well organized, we didn’t have problems and our guide Vladimir was very knowledgeable, helpful and kind.
★★★★★
This is a great trip because nothing is repeated. It includes a bus, a gondola ride, a walk to the peaks, a narrow gauge descent, and a boat ride. Our guide was very knowledgeable.
★★★★★
This was the perfect way to visit Pilatus! You could do it on your own, but the ease of being bussed to the tram and guided up and down the mountain is well worth the ticket.
★★★★★
Make sure to get cogwheel reservations ahead of time, in addition to your ticket. It was hot in Lucerne, but pleasantly cool at Pilatus Kulm.
★★★★★
Nice combo of city bus, cable car, gondola, mountaintop, cog railroad and boat ride. Tickets worked flawlessly. Being on our own and without a guide even added a sense of adventure.
★★★★★
Amazing and something you won’t forget! The self-guided tour instructions made it easy and you have one ticket for everything, from the bus, train, gondola and cogway tram and back.

The whole Pilatus loop as a guided day out of Zurich: coach to Kriens, gondola and Dragon Ride up, time on the summit, cogwheel railway down and a Lake Lucerne boat ride, with free time in Lucerne before the ride home.
Hotel-district pickup in ZurichFree time in Lucerne
Every visitor to Lucerne looks up at Pilatus; the only real question
is how you go up it and what you pay. The answer depends on one thing most guides
bury: which rail pass, if any, is in your pocket. Here is the mountain, the loop
and the ticket math, in plain terms.
What you are actually visiting
Pilatus is the 2,132-metre limestone wall standing directly over Lucerne, named
for a legend that Pontius Pilate lies in a lake near the summit and famous for a
resident dragon the town officially believed in until the 1600s. Queen Victoria
went up by mule in 1868; since 1889 the job has belonged to the Pilatusbahn, still
the steepest cogwheel railway in the world at a 48 percent gradient, which climbs
1,635 vertical metres from Alpnachstad in about half an hour. On top: two historic
hotels, terraces over ten lakes, the Dragon Path walkway cut into the cliff, and
an easy ridge walk to the Tomlishorn. The other flank carries the modern hardware,
the Dragon Ride aerial cableway and small panorama gondolas down to Kriens, and
chaining all of it with a lake boat is what the world knows as the Golden Round
Trip.
The Pilatusbahn has climbed the 48 percent grade from Alpnachstad since 1889 - still the world record.
The ticket math, honestly
The mountain’s own 2026 fares: CHF 84 return from either valley station,
CHF 119.80 for the full Golden Round Trip from Lucerne and CHF 94.20 for the
Silver version with the train instead of the boat. The Viator
packages sell the same loops from about $117 to $149 as one mobile ticket
with USD checkout and free cancellation to 24 hours - and cancellation is worth
real money on a mountain where the view is the product and the weather decides.
The guided day trip with lake cruise, around $198, adds a
coach, a guide and zero logistics. But one group should not buy any of them:
holders of a Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card, GA, Eurail or Interrail pay half
the official fare direct (CHF 42 return, CHF 59.90 for the Golden loop), and the
Lucerne Travel Pass rides free. Reviewers who found the packages dearer than
their discounted direct price were exactly right - the packages are for everyone
travelling without a Swiss pass.
The one step people miss: a cogwheel seat reservation is
separate from every ticket, official or packaged. On sunny summer days the good
slots sell out; book one as soon as you hold a ticket. It can be moved up to 30
minutes before departure, but not refunded.
Pilatus, Rigi or Titlis?
The eternal Lucerne question. Pilatus is the best transport story and the best
half-day: five different rides, the drama of the 48 percent grade, and the city
at its foot. Rigi across the lake is softer - open meadows, easy walks - and
rides free with the Swiss Travel Pass, which settles the argument for many
passholders. Titlis above Engelberg is the high-alpine card: 3,020 metres, a
glacier and snow in August, at the cost of a longer day. Doing Rigi and Pilatus
in one summer day is physically possible and universally regretted; give each
its own half-day and spend the difference on a terrace.
Autumn inversions leave the summit in sunshine above a sea of cloud - the valley fog is the mountain’s best trick.
When to come
The full Golden Round Trip runs when the boats do, May to mid-October; the
cogwheel railway runs 11 May to 29 November in 2026, and the Kriens cableways
most of the year. June brings alpine flowers, September and early October the
clearest air. In late autumn and winter the famous trick is the inversion: fog
fills the valley while the summit basks above a white sea - the webcam tells you
by breakfast. Whatever the month, the top runs about ten degrees colder than the
city, and the mountain makes its own weather; a blue sky in Lucerne is an
invitation, not a promise.
Making a day of it
Base yourself on the loop’s own rhythm: boat out mid-morning, two hours
on the summit, the Dragon Ride and gondolas down, and you step off bus 1 at
Lucerne station by late afternoon with the whole evening for the Chapel Bridge
and the old town. Travelling without a car changes nothing - every leg is public
transport or better. And if you are staying in Zurich, the mountain still fits
in a day: 50 minutes by train to Lucerne, or the guided
Zurich day trip that handles every connection including the boat.
The Chapel Bridge with the dragon mountain behind: the loop ends where the postcard begins.
For most first visits to Lucerne, yes. It is the mountain standing directly over the city, the trip up is half the attraction (a lake cruise plus the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, at 48 percent), and the summit terraces look over ten lakes and a wall of Alps. The whole Golden Round Trip fits between breakfast and dinner with time to spare.
How much does it cost to go up Pilatus?
The official 2026 fare is CHF 84 return from Kriens or Alpnachstad, half that with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card, and CHF 119.80 for the full Golden Round Trip from Lucerne with the boat. The Viator packages run about $117 to $198 in US dollars and add a single mobile ticket, USD checkout and free cancellation to 24 hours; the guided day trip includes a coach and a guide.
What is the difference between the Golden and Silver Round Trip?
One leg. The Golden Round Trip crosses Lake Lucerne by boat to Alpnachstad (about 70 to 90 minutes of cruising); the Silver Round Trip covers the same stretch by train in about 20 minutes. Everything on the mountain - cogwheel railway, Dragon Ride cableway, panorama gondola - is identical. Golden is the experience; Silver is the efficient version.
Is Mount Pilatus free with the Swiss Travel Pass?
No - this catches many people out. The Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card, GA, Eurail and Interrail all give 50 percent off the Pilatus railways, not free travel. Only the Lucerne Travel Pass rides free. If you hold one of the 50 percent passes, buying the discounted fare directly usually beats any package; see the ticket math.
Do I need to book Mount Pilatus in advance?
Book the ticket a few days out in summer, and reserve a cogwheel seat as well: the seat reservation is separate from the ticket, sells out on sunny days, and recent reviewers flag it as the one step people miss. Reservations can be moved up to 30 minutes before departure but not cancelled.
How long does the Pilatus cogwheel train take?
About 30 minutes up from Alpnachstad and 40 minutes down, climbing 1,635 vertical metres at gradients up to 48 percent. It runs every 35 minutes from 11 May to 29 November in 2026. The full Golden Round Trip loop takes 4 to 6 hours; the Silver loop can squeeze into 3 to 4.
How cold is it at the top of Mount Pilatus?
Reckon on the summit being about 10°C colder than Lucerne, with wind on the terraces. On a 25°C city day the top is pleasant in a light jacket; in spring and autumn you want proper layers, and there can be snow at 2,132 m well into May. Real shoes beat sandals: the best viewpoints are short rocky paths and tunnels.
Which is better, Pilatus or Titlis - or Rigi?
Pilatus is the best half-day from Lucerne and the best transport story: boat, cogwheel, cableway, gondola in one loop. Titlis is higher (3,020 m) with a glacier and year-round snow, but it is a fuller day via Engelberg. Rigi is gentler, with open meadows, and rides free with the Swiss Travel Pass, which settles it for many passholders. Doing Rigi and Pilatus in one day is possible in summer but rushed; two half-days are far better.
Can you hike up Mount Pilatus?
Yes, but it is a real mountain walk, not a stroll. The popular route from Alpnachstad up takes 4 to 5 hours; from the Fräkmüntegg gondola station the summit is still about 3.5 hours of steep switchbacks. Most walkers ride up and hike the flower-lined trails on top: the Dragon Path galleries, Esel and the Tomlishorn ridge (about 40 minutes each way).
How do I get to Mount Pilatus from Zurich?
Train to Lucerne takes about 50 minutes, then any option on this page. If you would rather not plan the connections, a guided day trip from Zurich runs the whole loop - coach, gondola, summit, cogwheel and lake cruise - in about 10 hours door to door.
