Pilatus from Zurich in a day

Zurich to the top of Pilatus is entirely doable in a day - the train to Lucerne takes about 50 minutes, and the whole mountain loop fits between a late breakfast and dinner. The only real decision is DIY versus guided.

Doing it yourself

Trains leave Zurich HB for Lucerne every half hour. From Lucerne you have every option covered in our from-Lucerne guide: bus 1 to the Kriens gondola, the S-Bahn to the Alpnachstad cogwheel, or the lake boat and the full Golden Round Trip. Budget CHF 50 to 60 return for the Zurich-Lucerne trains plus CHF 84 to 119.80 for the mountain (half with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card - the passes give 50 percent off Pilatus, not free travel). Leave Zurich by 9 AM and you are back by early evening with two hours on the summit banked.

The guided day trip

If you would rather not manage connections, the Mount Pilatus Summer Day Trip from Zurich runs the whole show in about 10 hours: coach from central Zurich to Kriens, panorama gondola and Dragon Ride up, time on the summit, the 48 percent cogwheel railway down and a Lake Lucerne boat ride, plus free time in Lucerne’s old town before the ride home. It carries a 4.6 rating from 772 Viator and Tripadvisor reviews and sells from about $210 with free cancellation to 24 hours. Against roughly CHF 135 to 180 of DIY fares, you are paying a modest premium for the coach, the guide and zero planning.

Worth knowing before you commit the day

Check the Pilatus webcam at breakfast: the summit makes its own weather, and clouds on top mean no ten-lake view whichever way you travelled. The full loop with the boat runs May to mid-October; in late October and November parts of the mountain transport close for maintenance (details in plan your visit). And the summit runs about 10°C colder than the lowlands - pack a layer even in August.
